Making History Come Alive
Thank you for considering Grissom Air Museum as a field trip destination for your school group. Our facility is uniquely capable of being integrated into your curriculum.

History, Science, & Art
As your students study history, art, and science you will find we offer exhibits highlighting those very areas of study.
  • Indiana History: We have exhibits on Hoosier aviation heroes, key aviation manufacturers in Indiana, as well as the vital history of the Grissom Air Reserve Base.
  • History: Uniforms, warprizes, armaments and letters help weave the story of U.S. military involvement from World War II through recent history. With personal stories of heroism and survival, students will gain a better understanding of the time period they are studying—and of the humanity of it as well.
  • Science: With hands-on exhibits and demonstrations, your students will come away understanding the principles of aerodynamics and flight controls, including how propeller and jet engines work.

  • Art: Renowned aviation artists and aircraft modelers have their work on display here. Plus, we hope your students will be so inspired by aviation, that they will enter their own creative works in our annual Student Aviation Art Contest.
Tips for Your Field Trip:
With so much to offer, the Grissom Air Museum is a natural choice for a fieldtrip. To maximize your student’s experiences here please note:
  • Schedule your tour in advance. If possible, let us know if the tour needs to focus on a particular point of interest.
  • We have veteran tour guides, who not only have experience in giving tours, but with the aircraft and history that they are teaching about. Help students come prepared to ask intelligent questions.
  • Tours typically last 1½ to 2 hours. However, there is plenty of material for an extended visit. We have some groups who spend most of the day with us. Please let us know in advance how much time you have allotted for your group’s tour.
  • We regularly give tours to preschoolers through senior citizens, so we can adapt our tour to meet your group’s needs—if you will just let us know what they are.
  • A scavenger hunt for exhibit information is available as an additional activity.
  • The Observation Tower can be a part of your group’s tour. There are 60 steps to the top. Students must be 4th grade, or older, and adequately supervised. Cost is $1 per person.
  • Your students can go inside one of our outdoor planes, the YS-11. When you make your reservation, please request that this be added to your tour.
  • The museum is a not-for-profit organization, that receives no federal funds for operation. We are very appreciative of groups that bring donations or allow time and opportunity to shop in our gift shop.
  • Educational opportunities at the Grissom Air Museum extend beyond being a field trip destination. If your class would like to do a community project, we have several needs that your students could fulfill. Be sure to ask our executive director, Andrew Cougill, if you need some ideas.
We are currently writing curriculum to help teachers use our facility to educate. When materials become available, we will post them here.
